BIOGRAPHY.
Jon was born in England and currently lives in the Black belt region of Alabama where he works within the documentary tradition, he makes photographs and art that unravels the meaning of cultural landscapes. His images do not attempt journalism but document, with drawings and photographs, the elusive meaning of “place” and how it has evolved. His formal training in architecture and post graduate study in ecological led to the curiosity of how built form is both a response to the natural landscape and holds a containing influence on its inhabitants.
Nature once seen as distinctly opposite of human culture is seen in Carroll’s photographs as something increasingly dissolved into a constantly evolving composition no longer separate. Urban landscapes are depicted as historical missteps in human development and the banality of urban development displayed. Before abandoning a successful career to become a mountain guide Carroll worked for some of the most prestigious design firms in the country ( Andropogon and Studio B) frustrated at becoming a “house-pet for the rich” he bought a beat up older Leica rangefinder at a yard sale and began documenting the landscapes opposed to what is considered “wild”. His images convey the complexity and tension of places, and moments in human development they depict.
